Consortium TA Team COVID-19 Special Topic Series: CARES Act Funds: FEMA

FEMA funds through the CARES Act relief package are a critical source of funding to ensure short term safe housing options for survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence and human trafficking during COVID-19. During this Special Topic session, Traci L. Brasher from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) discusses the CARES Act FEMA funds. Noah Patton, with the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC), discusses strategies for states/localities, coalitions and domestic violence programs to access and utilize the funds. Karen Jarmoc, with the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CTCADV), discusses strategies at the state level for building relationships/partnerships to access the funds as well as provide an overview of how Connecticut is utilizing FEMA funds to support survivors. Finally, Amy Turk with the Downtown Women’s Center (DWC), lends a homeless service provider perspective on the California Project Roomkey Initiative and discuss how local homeless/housing providers in Los Angeles County are utilizing FEMA funds for hotel/motel vouchering as well as provide best practice strategies for homeless/housing providers supporting survivors.

The special topic series is designed to give advocates a chance to learn more about the available housing funding for survivors, ask questions, process issues, and provide mutual support on the impact of the COVID-19 virus in safe housing programs.
